"Sonorous Form I [cello & water]" [2006 & 2007 ©] is an eight (plus) monitor installation in which the sounds of the C major scale are played out audibly and visibly. The aim of this piece is to make visible the physical movement of sound and to explore our perception of music.
Each monitor plays a looped sequence of one note from the scale eg monitor 1 = C monitor 2 = D etc. and as these loops play out they create improvisational music which change throughout playback as the loops for each monitor are of a different length. The length of each loop was determined by the cello player (Eilidh Glynn) who was asked to play a sequence of eight repetitions of each note, in one octave of the C major scale. These notes could differ in duration and timbre and the length of time between the notes could also be different, which creates a completely improvised piece of music as the installation plays out.
The sounds produced by the cello were played through a body of water, with a light reflecting off the surface. As the water is agitated by the sound , it creates wonderful patterns on the surface of the water, which were videoed to highlght the unique physical movement of each tone.
A unique 21-monitor version of Sonorous Form was made for the Threshold Art Space at Perth Concert Hall and remains part of their Digital Art Collection. Sonorous Form has also been exhibited at the Futuresonic Festival in Manchester.
